Alto works auto
Hi, i have an alto works automatic, it had speedo probs which i fixed by fitting a new cable to a english bought speedo dial as the original had a split where the cable was inserted, had to be modified a bit to make it fit !! Trouble is the gearbox stays in 3rd when you select drive, itcan be used like a semi auto by going thru low 2nd then drive , ANY IDEAS ?? dont know if the different speedo may have caused this as it worked before, had stereo fitted and the wiring looks a bit of a nightmare this could be a problem too as the front fogs wont work since it was fitted the car runs fine otherwise. shane.
I personally can't imagine it being the speedo as it's only doing it in a certain gear, not all the gears. Did you have to remove the speed pick up sensor? Perhaps something entered the gearbox through the hole for the sensor?!?!
I would be more inclined to think it's a mechanical cause rather than electrical.

Hello and welcome? Have you just bought this? There was a green automatic works last year I think with speedo cable problems....
The instruments you've modified, are they from a auto?
Ps found the thread... Sound or look familiar?
The speedo i put in was from a manual car , it works fine after a bit of mucking about didnt realise cable was broken at the other end , took a while to dig out the bit of remaining cable to insert the new one !!! may try the old speedo dial as it may work , nothing else was touched like the pick up sensor, yes it is the one mentioned on this site before , will have another go at it on my days off
You could be right. The gearbox is electronically regulated and connected with the speedo by the ECU. The gearbox verifies the speeds and and changes gear depending on the speed you drive.
