Is this Alto legit?
I'm looking to get my fist kei car, and it's looking like either an L250 Charade (Mira/Cuore) or a 5th gen Alto.
My question is, is this generation of Alto a legitimate kei car? Info on the dimensions seem to vary depending on where you look, but most state the length as ever so slightly too long. Is there a difference between the 3 and 5 door maybe?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have the previous model alto.
It was made in india as a maruti Zen then rebadged.
my glass still say maruti on them.
was available in japan as a cervo mode with a 657 3cylinder engine or a 658 4cylinder engine.
the 5th gen as you posted is said to still be a kei on some sites I looked on but they only talk of the 3 door models.
I have a 5 door model.
super reliable and 47.5mph for an 18 year old car!
Length wise it could be a kei car, but if that's a european 5th gen with 1 litre engine it's not, if it's a Japanese import with 650cc k6a engine it is a kei car. If you want a 'legit' kei car, your only way to go is with a Japanese kei import, the kei class as such only exists in Japan after all.
European altos are 10cm too long.
having done a lot of digging.
My alto and the one of original poster is indeen 10CM too long and probaly fitted with a 998cc/1.1/1.2 engine.
The kei version in japan is same body from engine bulkhead backwards.
however the front wings are shorter.
the headlight is right on leading edge on the front wheel arch and no gap between headlight and arch almost.
This is where the 10cm difference is, I suspect to fit the bigger engines.
I will try to upload images to show difference soon.
Width wise they are a kei but 10cm too long to be a kei body and the engine is too big.
The true alto kei is the Cervo Mode in japan.
These seem to have lengthened noses for european markets, as said suspect for bigger engines.
So unless an import no alto here in UK is a kei really.
