I am looking to buy a tr-xx and i happen to come across a car on ebay, sadly the car i was interested in was sold but the owner did say he had another with some light surface rust. Seeing as i know very little about body work and kei cars i wanted to ask members if this is bad for a car like this, and if it worth buying and trying to fix up. The car is based in Southampton and i live in Oxford with no car at them moment so i cant view it so i would have to pay someone like the aa to inspect it. The owner has sent me some images of the car, body wise is this bad of the age of the car? and you you think this would cost much to fix? do you think its worth spending £2k? i haven't asked him what grade it is yet when it was in japan, and what service history as i was at work and had alot of thing going on. :(

so what do you guys think of the images?

think for your help guys

The surface rust seems to be about the same as mine, which is standard amongst all Avanzatos really. (The ones that haven't had any love, anyway). How are the wheel arches looking, and the bonnet lip? Also, under the bonnet? Milage?

I paid £1550 for mine with 89,000 miles on the clock. Underneath has surface rust, as does the wheel arches and bonnet lip. However it did come with a full service history, with a fair amount of expensive work carried out rather recently (gearbox rebuild, re-cored radiator etc).

Some pics of the condition of my car can be found for comparison here.

Hard to say from the pics but it's not looking too bad.

From what the pics show it looks to be just surface rust but can't say for definate without actually seeing it.

Although I think 2k is top money so I would hope it's mechanically sound for that price.
If you could get more info on its spec, milage, ect then would be able to give a better input on price :)

hi i saw this car about october last year at the mx5 place and they were using it themselves as a daily drive, it looked tidy then and sounded well so im not surprised it has sold quickly at that price. as for getting the aa to inspect any kei car or any car of this age you would be wasting your money as they will know nothing about them and will only advise you not to purchase. keep looking and im sure one will show up soon. or if you are interested in a mira classic i have one myself that will be selling soon

Personally no, you gotta check it out, and think if your willing to put in some hours to clean it up, i wouldn't mind a little project like that, however, not at 2000, offer them a low offer and tell them to keep your details, trust me, they'll call.
Also, put some research prior to buying a kei car learn the ins and outs, how you can source parts (something I can help with)
etc.
Any questions i'm free to help

thanks for getting back to me jamie. after speaking to opjp about them he has offered to help supply any parts i need for them from japan as he is a Japanese car importer and has also offered to help any other member find parts (will make a new post about that another time) so parts shouldn't be too much of a problem.... (i hope) research wise i have tried but seem to find anything of any use.... :(

I'll be honest, I think £2000 is a bit steep considering the car doesn't really have any history and has over 100,000 miles on the clock (but only just). Obviously seeing it in person would help, but from what I can see, the rust doesn't look too bad (better than my car, if I'm honest), aside from that nasty looking hole in the engine bay that would need some attention.

If you do go and view the car, take it for a test drive. Be wary of the gearbox, most of them are pretty weak and are a common fault amongst those cars, with replacements being over £2k normally, though you might be able to find a used one for less than that, if you're lucky enough to find one. (Mine was rebuilt at a cost of £1050 by a previous owner, but still feels rather sloppy. Though by the looks of it, I could use a new pair of gearbox linkages). Turbos are another common issue, so look out for smoking etc. Fuel lines are another thing to look at, and cracked manifolds seem to be common on them as well.

I do agree with what Jamie is saying though. A lower offer would be sensible, and just see what happens. That way, you have some room to negotiate if you really need to, you know? £2k is top dollar for these cars, and for that I'd expect something a little more pristine. It's gorgeous though, and the red is incredibly appealing (makes a change from the usual silver).

Speaking of silver ones, there's this one floating around on eBay at the moment. Very low milage, apparently only two owners, a little ding in the boot and has green wheels for some reason. Looks like it's been pretty well cared for, and the rust doesn't seem that bad on that one (though the underside may be a different story, since the antirollbar mount has been welded. But then again, most 'Zatos have been welded at some point.) Engine bay looks to be in better condition than mine, and whilst it is pretty dirty, there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of rust at all. It's only at £700 at the moment, so I'd keep an eye on that as well.

One thing that I've found when driving mine more regularly, is that my car is trying to obliterate my spine. It's noisy, disappears into potholes and feels pretty much every bump and dip in the road. It's overly dramatic, and makes a big deal out of everything. There's a sense of pantomime about it. But it's so enjoyable just to flex your right foot and feel the boost kick in, so it seems like it's all worth it (to me at least). Just keep that in mind if you're looking to use the car on a regular basis.

Hope this has been some sort of help. B)
