emo The story of our Carol a.k.a. 'spud'

I'm in the same boat regarding the crankshaft bolt, my garage friend has one of these though...

Failing that a neatly drilled hole in the inner arch will allow access with a air gun... Hopefully... ???

Can't believe all the spiders webs! I had a few Japanese jumping spiders hiding in the air vents that literally jumped out when I started driving it the other week. Had to pull up and brush them out..

I never thought of that! Oh man, I'm going to be too terrified to drive her now!

The entire day has been spent working on little 'spud'.

I spent most of it cleaning the interior... and running away from the spiders... and more cleaning... and more running. My back feels like I've been stabbed in the back a million times!

Jamie decided that as we have a clutch, she's having a new clutch hehe (I hope it's the right one after all of this).

We also decided that as we have a whole exhaust system we might as well fit it, because the manifold end is impossible to get to usually!
http://kkitp.com/index.php/home/gallery/image?view=image&format=raw&type=img&id=1178

Someone's cut it clean in half with an angle grinder, so we're hoping we can weld it back together again.

Jamie's been having a lot of trouble getting to everything, but there's not a lot left in there now. We had to ask a friend to bring over his Snap-on torque gun to undo the crank shaft pulley bolt (we had to basically drop the whole engine to get to it GRUSS), and a lot of 'stamp on the brakes' required to get the ends of the drive shafts free.
http://kkitp.com/index.php/home/gallery/image?view=image&format=raw&type=img&id=1179

But she's getting there. I rang Euro car parts up and they have a Matiz gasket set but nothing listed for Carols or Alto works, and no head bolts. So we're going to take it all off and go to a local parts place and see if they can start matching some stuff up like the head bolts. Then we just need some service items like the plugs and filters and we're good to go!

Honey hopped inside while we were working under the bonnet... she seems to approve of Carol anyway hehe

I've scrubbed and vac'd the floor mats and the driver's seat, re-attached the trim underneath and cleaned the door card and that side of the dash. The driver's side is pretty much spider free too! Sadly I don't think the rear parcel shelf can be saved, it's covered in so much grime, got that off but it's so discoloured underneath I think I might just cover it in felt.

There would be lots of disappointed people if she didn't attend!  Looking forward to meeting Frank too!

Yesterday we took the radiator off and a thick brown sludge oozed out as only an oil filled radiator could!

Today I woke up suddenly at 8am and asked Jay if he remembered to get the radiator in last night (we worked until the light ran out). He said no, so I shot out of bed, grabbed a coat and went and fetched it before the scrap men came 'round to take anything that isn't bolted/welded down.

After going back to bed for a bit (it is Sunday after all) I decided to drain the radiator. What a horrid mess!

I then went back out the front of the house and continued to help Jamie get the head off. I've actually got a lot more involved in Carol's beheading than I usually do, I ended up all covered in oil, grease, grim and other associated fluids while helping out. It's been very rewarding. Around about 3pm we were finally able to lift the head off the block.

The gasket was in a right state, we think Carol may have been ran until she could run no more!
:(

However the engine turns over very nicely, there's a bit of rust on the bores but nothing a hone wouldn't fix.

On my way inside to make sandwiches I turned back to see this and thought I had to take a picture.

But the head is off, the gearbox and block have been separated

What I want to know though, is how on earth this spider survived inside the gearbox bell housing?

Sadly I think things will slow down for a week or so as we're both at work this week. We also need to get hold of some more parts before we can continue. I'm not sure she'll have an engine in time for KKITP... but we will try our best.

Keep up the good work!  :thumb:

If your planning on replacing the timing belt whilst it's fully stripped which I suspect you will be then this will be helpful..

Only found this tonight after typing in Mazda carol... The missing link! Spent weeks trying to get a belt. Had all the numbers But nobody could source one.

Also a QH one..

And a tensioner... Which is just a daewoo Matiz one

The daewoo Tico and carol and alto works are all related  :ninja:

We were lucky enough to have all we needed for a belt change included with the car.

I'm taking pictures of the parts and numbers as we go, just not posting them up yet until I know they fit!

Thanks for the help though.

At the moment we need, but do not have a head gasket, inlet manifold gasket, exhaust manifold gasket or head bolts. Do you know if these are common with the Daewoo?
