Hi, I have just purchased a 1995 Suzuki Alto Works and have a few issues with the car that hopefully someone can help me out with.

The speedo doesn't work - Any assistance with trouble-shotting would be appreciated.

Engine Check Light comes on and then goes out and sometimes stays on!. The car runs fine with no performance issues - Again any assistance would be appreciated.

PS. Great site and have spent quite a bit of time looking through the galleries

Welcome!
Is this the one that has been talked about with the auto/manual misprint ad?

No, I lifted the pic from that thread as it was the closest image to the car I purchased.

Hello there!

Hopefully someone can give you hand to sort out your problems. I myself know nothing about the Alto Works, but at a guess I would say check the speed sensor on the gearbox first. See if it looks damaged, if possible find a garage that can bench test it. After that I'm guessing it's going to be either electrical/cable (dependant on drive), or that the speedo is faulty!

Feel free to say hi in the Newbies section! I'd love to see some pics of your cars!

Is the car white? and auto?

The EM light is probably related to the speedo problem which as emily has said could be a sensor on the gearbox or the actual speedo head.

Do you know if the car has a OBD plug so that you could plug a scanner in and read any codes stored. It will probably have a speed signal code stored. This could affect the gearchanges if its a auto...

I think it should have the OBD as I think it was forced on manufacturers from 1991/2. I will check on Saturday when I get a chance to tinker with the car. It's an auto. Any idea where the plug would be i the engine bay and where I could lay my hands on a scanner??

No idea where the plug should be, but I do think it should be yellow!

Not that that really helps a great deal (sorry)

It should be under the dash near the steering wheel or could be in the engine bay. You can pick up a scanner off ebay for not a lot of money and there always useful to keep for the future.
